RECYCLED RUSSELLS FOR ADOPTION
Thank you to Mandy Roth for designing our logo. She did an awesome job!!
Recycled Russells is a private rescue for Jack Russell Terriers. We are dedicated to finding the ideal homes for these dogs. Jack Russells are not the breed for everyone. Most people tend to relinquish their dogs to the rescue because they didn't spend the time to research the breed. Jack Russells are bred to be hunting dogs and this can make them difficult to live with (small fast and furry are fair game!) They were originally bred to hunt fox, here in America they hunt a variety of quarry. Their hunting nature tends to tempt them to stray in an unfenced environment. This has made being hit by a car the number one killer of the breed. Due to these tendencies you can see why it is important to match the right dog with the right home.
We will not take a dog into rescue with a history of biting. We will make sure that the dogs are spayed/neutered prior to being placed. In rare instances, we will allow a dog to go to a new home with a spay/neuter contract (usually if the dog is too young to be altered). RESCUE DOGS ARE NOT FOR BREEDING PURPOSES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. These dogs will be brought up to date on their vaccines and have a negative heartworm test. We charge a fee of $50 to relinquish a dog to the rescue as long as the dog is up to date on vaccines. If the dog is not up to date the fee to relinquish is $100. While we don't have a set fee to adopt, the minimum fee is $100. The adoption fee can be higher if the dog has had extensive vet bills.
We started this rescue due to an overwhelming amount of dogs ending up in shelters throughout the country. Chi and I had been active with the JRTCA rescue but are not current members at this time. An alarming amount of dogs have been fostered and adopted out through us. We have both been doing this for about 14 years and are good at matching dogs with new owners. Our goal is to educate puppy buyers, potential adopters and continue to "recycle" the terriers into good homes. Could you be the next good home? Fill out our application and we will review it. This process can take time, please be patient.
Most dogs that come into the rescue were impulse buys or bought for kids. A lot of kids wanted a "Wishbone or Frasier" dog. Many parents didn't realize that this breed is not always suited for kids under 6. Many parents also found out that children lost interest because walking and caring for a dog got tiring. This is an active breed and doesn't mature until 18 mos. and even then can remain puppyish into their teen years!! The average lifespan is 16 active years! If you have children, please realize that this is like adding a child to your household. If your household is hyper your dog will feed off the energy level and can be hyper as well. If you have a quiet home then most of them will stay lower key.
We strive to educate prospective adopters about the nature of the breed. DESPITE what you have read above, this dog is a loving family pet. Jack Russells must be raised in a firm environment and we recommend obedience training to give them a job! This breed loves to sleep in and snuggle under the covers. So, yes Jack Russells are active but they still enjoy sleeping in on the weekends too!!
Our wish is to see "breeders" do their part and be responsible. An ethical breeder will take their dog back if the dog doesn't work out (anytime during their life). Please research breeds before you leap into buying a puppy. Beware of "backyard breeders" because they will not screen you properly as a prospective buyer. Most wanted "Fluffy" to have puppies for the kids to see birth and then realize the puppies are a lot of work and want to have them gone quick! They see the cash come through the door and can't wait be rid of a puppy that is pooping all the time. This is the worst way to buy a dog and the primary reason for rescue groups.
The pet shops also keep the rescue full of dogs because they will tell you anything to get a sale. The pet shops get their puppies from puppy mills that mass produce puppies. They are not raised in a social environment and are often fearful. Please take a few minutes to read through my puppy mill pages and see how they live! You will see some graphic pictures so just remember them next time you see a little puppy in a pet shop window. The cycle starts at the puppy mill, pet shops and then the backyard breeders (who usually bought their parents at the pet shop!!) It is a vicious cycle and the dogs pay the price with their lives. Please don't patronize pet shops that sell puppies.
